Svenskt Vatten and the Swedish Water Sector

Svenskt Vatten is the industry organisation for Sweden’s most essential food producers and environmental service providers – the public water and wastewater sector. We represent and advance the collective interests of our more than 300 members in both national and international policy and regulatory processes.

About Svenskt Vatten

Svenskt Vatten is Sweden’s national industry organisation for water and wastewater services. We represent municipalities and municipal companies responsible for public drinking water supply and wastewater treatment.

Our members provide services to the vast majority of Sweden’s population, ensuring access to safe drinking water and sustainable wastewater management. Through collaboration, advocacy and knowledge-sharing, we support our members in their mission to deliver reliable, endurable water services with long term viability.

  • Strong expertise and innovation within the sector
  • Robust systems adapted to withstand climate change and future challenges.

European Collaboration

EurEau

Much of the legislation affecting the Swedish water and wastewater sector originates from the European Union. EU policy therefore shapes both regulatory requirements and long-term investment needs in Sweden. It is therefore essential for Svenskt Vatten to be present at the European level to contribute to the development of policies affecting the sector and our members. This work is often conducted through the collaborative efforts of the European federation for water and wastewater services, EurEau.

EurEau is based in Brussels and brings together organisations from 29 countries, collectively providing water services to around 400 million people and employing approximately half a million professionals. Through EurEau, Svenskt Vatten works alongside European partners to influence EU policy and legislation affecting the sector. Svenskt Vatten CEO Pär Dalhielm currently serves as President of EurEau.

About the Swedish Water Sector

Our members provide essential services to around 90 per cent of Sweden’s population connected to the municipal water and wastewater network. With an annual turnover of approximately 15 billion SEK, the Swedish water sector employs around 6,000 people, with the mission to operate and maintain water treatment plants, distribution networks and wastewater treatment facilities across the country.

Challenges for the Water Sector

The public water and wastewater sector plays a vital role in safeguarding public health, protecting the environment and enabling sustainable development. At the same time, the conditions for delivering water services are changing rapidly, creating a more complex and demanding operating environment.

Key challenges include:

  • Ageing infrastructure requiring significant reinvestment and upgrading
  • Increasing risks linked to climate change, including droughts and flooding
  • Stricter environmental and regulatory requirements
  • Geopolitical uncertainty and a changing global context
  • Population growth and increasing demand for water services
  • Financial constraints and tougher economic conditions
  • Challenges in securing the right skills and expertise
  • The need to strengthen preparedness and resilience
  • Ongoing digital transformation, including the impact of AI.
